About this Project

2011-2017 MACHINES WITH PROBLEMS (videos)
2008-2013 CAMPFIRE ISLAND (radio & interviews)

MACHINES WITH PROBLEMS was a four+ year project of shooting video of live bands in the national underground of punk, post-punk and hardcore.

Somewhere around here are over 150 cool videos in various places online, many terrible photos of shows, and even some truly AWESOME interviews featured from my other project, Campfire Island.

This effort started in earnest on June 8th, 2011 and after four years began to slow down in October of 2015. I probably still have about 100 more videos to edit and get posted. Maybe someday… In any case, all these videos share a pretty low-fi approach, but it’s about catching the energy of what is happening between band and audience – not idol worship or the guitar solo.

2008 – 2013

Campfire Island broadcasted a radio show on KAOS 89.3 FM (in Olympia, WA) (almost) every Saturday night from Sept. 2008 to Oct. 2013. Our first Campfire Island radio show was on September 13th, 2008. While you can tell we’re from Olympia, WA and Gainesville, FL – the show was really about the national underground of punk, post-punk and hardcore – it was about celebrating music and people and stories.

Here are just a few of our favorite shows:

January 24th, 2009 – hosted by Frank with Pat Maley (Yo Yo records) and Aaron Kruse
July 24th, 2010 – hosted by Frank with Lucas Andrews (KNOW YOUR SAINTS, ANCHOR DOWN)
May 21st, 2011 – hosted by Joe Barresi with Chris Bauermeister (JAWBREAKER, MUTOID MEN)
December 3rd, 2011 – hosted by Frank with Ben Trogden (Nuts! Fanzine, WEIRD TV
March 31st, 2012 – hosted by Seven & Frank with Shannen Hansen (HYSTERICS)
June 16th, 2012 – hosted by Rose & Frank with Maria (RAGANA)
March 16th, 2013 – hosted by Rose & Frank with SURVIVAL KNIFE live in studio
September 14th, 2013 – hosted by Tim Grisham including his interview of Ian Mackaye

At this point we have over FIVE years of radio playlists that you can search around in and even some AWESOME interviews that you can listen to. We, and our guests, are into punk, post-punk and hardcore music and any other music made by punks… or anything related that makes sense. Thanks for taking a look.

Typically, the first hour of the radio show was mostly new music and current touring bands… the second hour was anything in the full 30+ years of punk that we wanted to play. There were frequent guest djs, and usually co-hosts. Our playlists should be enough proof that there were some kick ass radio shows going on, but a lot of the playlists have full low-fi audio of the related show – so enjoy yourself… and keep buying records.

The whole shebang here is named after Joe Strummer’s last painting, which his friends received on a Christmas Card the day he died. For the full story, watch: “The Future is Unwritten: JOE STRUMMER” by Julian Temple. Which is recommended without reservation.

Thanks for checking out these videos, interviews, and the music of these amazing artists. All I did was try to document things, I guess. I hope you find something special in this archive. You’re always welcome to get in touch.
